Oceansing Aquaponics Systems

Oceansing Aquaponic Systems (OAS) are commercial scale aquaponics model which are enhanced and modified to suit the local conditions. The entire system is made up of fish rearing tanks, clarifiers, filter tanks, degaussing tanks and planter tanks that work together in calculated balance to create a self-sustainable system that produces the maximum yield for crops and fishes under Metro Farm. 

The aquaponics farming method is tested and widely popular in the United States. Metro Farm has adapted this farming method to produce harvests that greatly exceed the production levels of traditional soil farming within a shorter timeframe. 

Using aquaponics (the combination of hydroponics and aquaculture), more crops and fishes can be grown within the same limited space and grow faster and healthier. Metro Farm has built up extensive experience with a 3000sqft aquaponics prototype system that has yielded crop and fish produce that have been witnessed by AVA officials and ministers. To date, Metro Farm has setup a full scale commercial farm spanning 7000sqft at Kranji to boost the crop and fish production levels.

Self-Sustainable System

Aquaponics is a close-loop self-sustainable system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics. By rearing the fishes in the aquaponics system, the fishes produce waste that are broken down by microbes and worms into nutrients. The crops absorb the nutrients from the water and purify the water back to the fishes.
Water Reuse. The water used for the OAS can be PUB tap water or effective reuse of water collected from rainwater. A rainwater collection system can be integrated which goes through a series of filtrations and purification by means of RODI purification method to ensure the water is safe for normal consumption.

Harness Solar Energy. The OAS can also be equipped with energy-efficient solar panels that can further help to save the electricity required to maintain the water pump system and even indoor lighting required for plant photosynthesis. This helps to protect the natural environment and greatly reduced our carbon footprint.

Easy and Low Maintenance

The OAS uses just one water pump and air pump to power up and sustain the entire system for 24 hours non-stop. The OAS requires topping up of water due to evaporation, occasional cleaning of algae and feeding of fishes daily. However, all these minor tasks can be easily automated by installing add-ons. The adding of water due to evaporation can be automated by installing a water top-up system. The occurrences of algae within the water can be mitigated by installing a UV filter that will eliminate the algae. The feeding of fishes can also be automated for the specific timings as required. The only requirement for the OAS is that there must be a stable and reliable power supply to produce sufficient oxygen for the fishes and crops.

Smart Automation and Monitoring

With advances in smart automation and monitoring technologies, the OAS can be enhanced to remotely monitor and control the status of various water parameters. The smart automation and monitoring technologies can be achieved through cascading series of different functional modules together to provide sensor readings that gives simple straight forward indication of how well the crops and fishes are growing.

Metro Farm provides training on how to operate the various smart sensors and monitoring equipment. The smart automation and monitoring technologies can monitor various water parameters such as pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, oxygen, temperature, water level, and provide the option to remotely control various equipment that balance the system. Metro Farm also provides 24/7 remote monitoring of the aquaponics systems. In the unlikely event of any changes to the water conditions or system failure, Metro Farm will provide on-site deployment to help you rectify the problem. This helps lessen the workload for the teachers and provides an added assurance that someone is monitoring the health of the OAS.

Safe To Use

Metro Farm places high importance and priority in creating a safe and conducive environment that is suitable for all educational purposes. The OAS are constructed using durable fibre materials that are able to last a long number of years.

Taking the safety of the young students into consideration, the OAS does not have sharp corners or rough surfaces that will endanger the students or teachers of the aquaponics system. The electrical wires of the water pump and air pump are also properly laid, insulated and secured to ensure that there are no hazardous wires that may cause students to trip or be exposed to water which may caused electrical trips. The water piping will be kept close to the aquaponics systems and any piping that needs to run across the floor will be properly covered in order not to pose any dangers to students and teachers. The height of the fish tanks will be higher than the average student so that the students will not fall into the fish tanks while operating. The planter tanks are one feet tall which they can easily access to do farming on the crops.

Mosquito-Free

Dengue fever and its more severe form, Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, are the most common mosquito-borne viral diseases in the world. The viral disease is spread by the Aedes mosquitoes that live and breed around our homes and work places. Currently, there are no drugs or vaccines for dengue.

The key benefit of our closed-loop self-sustainable OAS system is that it has a sustainable control mechanism where it produces continuous water flow to inhibit the growth of mosquitoes. Fishes in the system will eat any mosquito larvae that female mosquitoes lay in the water. This makes the OAS system very ideal to be deployed in schools, community, home and commercial farming as it will eliminate the breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes and greatly reduces the risk of nearby residents getting bitten due to traditional farming and gardening practices. Hence, the OAS is an ideal platform that provides a safe learning environment for students and teachers.
